Add a Real Countdown to Your Cart Link Offers
The options page before checkout can now show a countdown to the end of your offer. It counts down to a real deadline that every shopper shares, and when it reaches zero the offer is over. This post covers when a timer helps, how to set one up and what shoppers see.

When a countdown helps
A countdown earns its place when the deadline is real and the shopper has a reason to care about it. These campaigns fit well:
- Launches. An intro price for the first 48 hours of a new product rewards early buyers and gives the promotion a clear end.
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Your sale already has a start and an end. Shoppers are comparing offers from a dozen inboxes, and a timer tells them exactly how long yours lasts.
- Limited drops. When a collab or a seasonal batch closes on a set date, the timer says so on the page where shoppers make up their minds.
It helps less on evergreen offers. A welcome discount that never ends has no deadline to show, and making one up is where timers start causing trouble.
Why the deadline has to be real
Plenty of shoppers have met the timer that resets. They open a page on Monday and the offer ends in 15 minutes, then open it again on Tuesday and it still ends in 15 minutes. Once someone notices, they stop believing the timer, and often the rest of the page goes with it: the discount, the low-stock line, the reviews.
There's a legal side too. In the EU, falsely claiming that an offer is only available for a very limited time, to push people into deciding on the spot, is on the list of commercial practices that are banned outright.
So Cart Rocket's countdown only counts to an actual end date. Every shopper sees the same deadline, whether they open the link the minute your email lands or two days later. Nothing is saved per visitor and nothing restarts. When the time runs out the offer really ends: the page says so and the button stops working.
Set it up
The countdown lives on the options page before checkout. That's the page in your store's own theme where shoppers review the cart and choose a size or colour before they go on to checkout. If you haven't used it yet, it takes one checkbox to turn on.
- Open the cart in Cart Rocket and go to Options page before checkout. Tick Show the options page before checkout, and fill in Heading, Description and Button label if you want your own wording.
- Tick Show a countdown until this offer ends.
- Under Count down to, choose when the timer ends. When this cart link ends uses the end date in the cart's Active dates. A date and time I choose lets you enter an End date (UTC) and End time (UTC) for the offer alone. If your store isn't on UTC, the editor shows the same moment in your store's time zone under the time field, so you can check that 23:59 UTC is the time you meant.
- If you picked When this cart link ends and the cart has no end date yet, a warning tells you there's nothing to count down to. Click Set an end date. It turns the end date on, fills in the start date at 23:59 UTC unless you'd already entered one, and opens Active dates so you can set the real deadline.
- Change the Label if you like. It's the line above the timer, Offer ends in by default, and it takes up to 40 characters. Launch price ends in or Sale ends in both fit.
- Save. The link address doesn't change, so you can add a countdown to a link you've already shared.

Active dates
For most campaigns, When this cart link ends is the better choice, because the timer and the link then share one end date. The countdown hits zero at the same moment the link stops, and anyone who opens the link afterwards is sent to the product or home page with a short notice. Add a start date as well and a Black Friday cart can go live at 00:00 UTC on Friday and count down to Monday night.
Pick A date and time I choose when you want the offer to end on the options page while the link keeps working. Shoppers who open it after that time still land on your page in your theme, where This offer has ended replaces the timer, and they aren't redirected.
Discounts
Discounts on a cart link only apply to shoppers who check out through it. Once the timer reaches zero, nobody can continue from the options page, so the discount ends with the countdown. Use the label to say what's ending, such as 20% off ends in, and mention the discount in the heading or description so shoppers know what the timer is for.
Creator links
A creator's link is your cart link with their code on the end (?ref=mia), so it opens the same options page and counts down to the same deadline. A creator who posts on Thursday and one who posts on Saturday are promoting the same end time, and their followers can't get a later deadline by opening the link later. Opens, orders and revenue still show per creator in Analytics.
Purchase limits
For a limited drop, add a cap under Advanced in Purchase limits. The countdown handles time and the cap handles quantity, so the drop closes when either runs out.
What shoppers see
Your label and the timer sit above the cart summary, under the list of products. The timer shows days, hours, minutes and seconds (2d 04h 12m 09s) and updates every second. In the last 24 hours the days drop off. Screen readers hear the time left at most once a minute, so they aren't interrupted every second. If a shopper's browser doesn't run JavaScript, the page shows the end time as text instead, such as Ends October 9, 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC.
At zero, This offer has ended replaces the timer and the button is turned off. If someone left the tab open and tries to submit anyway, Cart Rocket refuses it and shows them the same notice as an expired link. Anyone who opens the page after the deadline sees the ended message straight away. Prices on the page use your store's own currency format, the same as everywhere else in Cart Rocket.
Before you send the link, open it yourself with Open under Cart link in the editor and check the label, the timer and the end time.
